The Evolution of Thought in Jewish History

Eitz Chaim is pleased to announce a one-year course on "The Evolution of Thought in Jewish History." The course is taught by Stuart I. Forman, MEd, PhD, MSJS and covers the periods of the Biblical era, Talmudic era, the Medieval period and the Modern Period. It focuses on the progress and nature of Jewish thinking as it has developed throughout the ages until today.

We started learning on January 10, 2021 via Zoom an have continued once a month on Sunday evenings from 7:00-9:00 pm. Future dates will be announced throughout the year.

The classl offers college level study including presentations, texts and discussion. The goal of the course is to (1) acquaint people with Jewish thinking and its development and (2) to create a more in-depth knowledge of Jewish history than can be obtained through Torah study alone.

A caveat is that the course will expose people to Higher Text Criticism and the Historical Method. This is not specifically a course on theology and the material may confront traditional belief systems by evaluating those beliefs within their historical contexts.

There is no charge for course participation and no required text or reading. Knowledge of Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek and Latin terms are helpful but not required.

Anyone interested in committing to a year course of study should contact the office. The course is currently planned to be limited to about 20 people on a first come first served basis.
